For twelve years I have published a weekly devotion.  Writing these devotions has been a great joy, because they gave God a great opportunity to go deeper into my heart and life.  God is pressing me in a different direction which has led me to make this my last devotion.  I wanted to use this devotion to teach twelve principles which have been formative in my walk with Christ.  I hope you find these not just helpful, but also transformative in your life.

  1. Less is best, more is good.  Our Christian culture tends to confuse one’s walk with Christ by taking on too much in learning, knowledge, and study while missing the bare necessity of what Christ desires.  Mark 12:28-31 says: “Of all the commandments, which is the most important. . . ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'   The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these.’"
  2. Your most important quest and the end of every activity is to have an intimate, passionate, relationship with Christ.  John 17:3 says, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.”
  3. Your life must be filtered through the Lordship of Christ.  Your Lordship to Christ must not just shape your life, but must also be the food that drives it, so that Christ is released in all you are and do.  John 14:23-24 says, “Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching.  My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.  He who does not love Me will not obey My teaching.  These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent Me.”
  4. Real Christianity results in fruitfulness where one hears God and obeys by doing what God desires to do in, through, and around you?  The depth of your relationship will produce fruit I your life.  John 15:8 says, "By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.”
  5. Never walk away from God’s Word and leading in your life.  When God presses something on your heart then go deeper for greater understanding, conviction, and fruitfulness, but do not walk away from His Word.  Proverbs 19:2 says, “Desire without knowledge is not good.  The man in a hurry misses the way.”
  6. Be diligent in the three callings every Christian has: Witnessing, discipling, and ministry.  These three callings will be active if you are faithfully walking with Christ.  Position yourself personally, in groups, and in your church for these three callings.  Matthew 28:19-20 says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you." 2 Timothy 2:2 says, “The things which you have heard from e in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
  7. Living your life with a forgiving heart releases you from carrying a burden that not only saps away your life, but also builds a wall between God and you.  Matthew 18:21-22 says, "’Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me?  Up to seven times?’"  Jesus answered,’I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
  8. Allow God to take hold of every opportunity, problem, and challenge, so to allow God to release His power, presence, and wisdom in you.  Living this way is not easy, but each step of faith results in your life having greater joy and fruitfulness.  When you give your life to God you sow into Him, thus allowing Him to give you a return.  Psalm 126:6 says, “He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.”
  9. Always go down God’s funnel of life.  Approach every spiritual activity asking God what He has for you.  Doing this will present you with opportunities that now become convictions resulting in crises of faith.  Do you have the faith to obey and trust?   Trusting God in obedience results in fruitfulness.  Hebrews 4:2 says, “For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.”
  10. Begin each day with a quiet time plus a written application of one key thing given in that quiet time.  Pray into and take this application into your day.  Mark 1:35 says, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
  11. Live in the astonishment of Christ.  God’s way is not easy or safe, but through faith you will experience Christ as never before.  Mark 10:32 says, “They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way.  The disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid.
  12. Live your life in Christ not for the assurance of your salvation, but to experience God and all He has for you.  In this verse Paul speaks first of your salvation for eternity, but then how great it is to experience God through His work and life in you now!  Romans 5:10 says, “For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!”
