"Fountain of Life"

Date published: 07/06/2015
Isaiah 45:8 “You heavens above, rain down righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness grow with it; I, the LORD, have created it.” (NIV)

The last three devotions gave three mindsets for obedience. As much as obedience is the wellspring of life, you must always keep in mind that it is out of God’s righteousness that you are made righteous. In this verse you get a complete picture of the gospel. Out of God’s righteousness...His life, Spirit, love and grace are all showered upon you. God desires not only your reconciliation to Him, but also desires His righteousness to grow in you. Once you receive Christ, you are admonished to “let righteousness grow with it.” God begins with righteousness in the hope that righteousness will flourish in you.

The difficulty of righteousness flourishing in you might be hidden in the backdrop of this verse.  Water, rain, and sowing into you are all designed to reap a harvest of righteousness. Just as it is not enough to plant a seed and water it once, you must continue sowing into God’s Word, praying, and trusting Him with your life. 1 Corinthians 3:6 says, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.”(NIV)  Once you remove yourself from the source of nourishment and refreshment, you shrivel and die. Knowing Christ in salvation is wonderful, but unless you keep coming back to the wellspring of life to be watered and fed you will miss the righteousness for which He created you. Come daily to the Lord for feeding, for His encouragement, and for His direction, so that the fountain of His righteousness might pour through you.

Hosea 10:12 “Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until He comes and showers righteousness on you.” (NIV)
